Area Sacra di Largo Argentina

Surrounded by a busy bus and tram junction, the remains of these four Republic-era (starting from the 4th century BC) temples were revealed during construction work in the 1920s, close to the spot where Julius Caesar was slain. The columns in the centre belong to the Temple of Fortuna. The name Argentina derives from a nearby house of a 16th century bishop Hans Burckhardt from Strasburg (in Latin Argentorum), who called his residence Torre Argentina.

It is now home to hundreds of stray cats, and you can visit the ruins on tours organised by the volunteers at the cat sanctuary each Sunday.
