Isola Tiberino

The world's smallest inhabited island has been associated with healing since the 3rd century BC and the belief continues today with the Fatebenefratelli hospital 'Ospedale Fatebenefratelli'. There's also a cute, recently restored, 10th century church and what remains of the Ponte Rotto ('Broken Bridge'), Rome's first stone bridge, is visible on the south side.

The island lies to the south of the Centro Storico, and this shot was taken from the Ponte Garibaldi as I walked down the Via Arenula from the Area Sacra di Largo Argentina to the lively Trastevere districton the south side of the Tiber to find a nice trattoria for dinner.

My pick was Alle Fratte di Trastevere, in a side street off the Viale Trastevere, and which was described in the guidebook thus:

"If all you're looking for is an authentic trattoria with delicious, hearty food and a warm welcome then you can now give up the search; this, for our money, is the best in Rome. Join local businessmen, priests and grateful tourists for generously portioned Roman fare amid chirpy decor."

It lived up to its billing.
